Be a Green Machine & Natural vs Organic Look

Protect the planet while on the road-save some coin, too!

Q) How can I make my car more eco-friendly?

A) Start with a tune-up. That can boost your mileage by about 4%. Removing your car;s roof rack will also improve your fuel economy by about 5%. Avoid using your car as a rolling storage locker; 100 pounds of gear in the trunk can increase fuel consumption by up to 2%.
Next, consider low-rolling resistance tires(6% improved mpg). If you can't afford new tires, keep the ones you have properly inflated; running on under-inflated tires can reduce your fuel consumption by around 3%.
Switching to synthetic motor oil can help your vehicle run more efficiently under extreme conditions, and it can last up to three times longer between changes than pure petroleum-based oil. This can save an estimated 15 to 24 quarts of oil per year.
Finally, use environmentally friendly car-care products, like waterless car wash solution and cleaners that use bio-based natural fruit and plants.

How to 'green your grooming'- the right way.

Most guys think the terms "natural" and "organic" are interchangeable. Nope. Generally, natural products are derived directly from nature. Organics are similar, but there ingredients are grown without most conventional pesticides or fertilizers. But is going green the best strategy? Not everyone things so. "I'd rather see guys choose ingredients based on effectiveness than on whether it is or is not organic or natural," says West Palm Beach,FL cosmetic dermatologist Kenneth Beer,M.D. "Poison ivy is all-natural and organic, but you wouldn't want to put it on your face."

A few natural and organic products worth trying:

*Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo & Conditioner $18 @ aveda.com
both carry the Gold Cradle to Cradle seal, a certification awarded for intelligent design and sustainability.

*Burt's Bees Natural Skin Care for Men Body Wash $8 @ burtsbees.com
like all Burt's Bees products, this one is paraben-, sulfate-, petrochemical-, and phthalate-free. Trust us: That's good!

*Origins Totally Pure Deodarant Certified Organic $15 @ origins.com
eliminate the stink with this combo of organic white willow bark, lavender alcohol, and 100% organic essential oils.

*Jack Black Supreme Cream Triple Cushion Shave Lather w/Macadamia Nut Oil & soy $12-22 @ getjackblack.com
it boasts certified organic, fragrance-free, colorant-free, and cruelty-free ingredients.

Preventing a money disaster - after a disaster! Uh-Oh. A pipe breaks & floods your basement. Bad enough, right? But if you can't prove the value of what was destroyed in an accident(or what was stolen in this case of theft)things could get even worse. Having an inventory of your goods--along with supporting materials, such as photographs and receipts--to present to your home owner's insurance company is crucial. Use this to learn how to document your valuables properly. Then store this information electronically in an online(read: waterproof) e-mail account. Be sure to update it every two years & after you make a major purchase. Keep pictures in a bank safe-deposit box or save them in an online photo account, like Snapfish. Financial crisis averted.
continued: this chart explains how to keep track of valuables & their worth-just in case you ever need to file a claim with your home owner's insurance company.

who viewed your Facebook profile?

THE RIP-OFF: Admit it-you would love to know who's been checking out your page. Maybe your college sweetheart? Or your spouse's ex? This scheme, which pops up on the social-networking site as an advertisement or a message on your wall that appears to be from a friend(but in reality isn't), promises to let you do just that.

THE TIP-OFF: Click to download the app and you'll be disappointed in more ways than one. "Facebook does not offer a way for members to see who has viewed their profile, nor do we allow applications to provide this information," says Simon Axten, a company spokesman. Try to use it and you could give scammers access to your Facebook account and everything in it, including your e-mail, physical address, and photos--which may make you a victim of identity theft. Additionally, scammers could target people on your friends list with the same scheme.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: Never click on these app links, says Graham Cluley, a consultant with Sophos, a computer-security company. And don't think that you can find out who has rejected your friend request, either(another version of this scam) You can't. If you see an application or a page that promotes either of them, contact Facebook (facebook.com/help). The company has posted a security alert promising to remove the links from its site.

Social Media Helps Employers Get the Word Out

Social media is no longer a promotional tool just for small business and professionals looking to establish their brands. Increasingly large organizations with well-established brands and customer bases are using internet tools to promote every aspect of their business and better engage with not only consumers, but potential employees. At the same time job hunters visit social sites to get a well-rounded sense of how an organization runs its business. A recent CareerBuilder survey of 2,534 U.S. hiring managers and 4,498 full-time U.S. workers offer these findings:
44% of companies with more than 1,000 workers use social networking to promote their companies.

35% of job seekers visit those sites or job listings.

26% source fast facts about the organization.

23% research information on career paths.

16% look for evidence that working there is fun.

16% research employee testimonials.

9% if job seekers research studies that the company has conducted.

A New search engine - check it out

DuckDuckGo.com Search Engine
duckduckgo.com

Remember the old days (three years ago which I supposed in "Internet Time" is the really old days) when Google was a simple search engine? There was as simple search form, you typed in your keywords, and you received decent results.

In reading one of my favorite e-newsletters, Search Engine Land, I learned about a new search engine with a funny name, DuckDuckGo.com. If you forget the playful name and logo for a moment, what you'll find is that DuckDuck delivers some "quackingly" good results combined with a simple user interface.

Use DuckDuck just like any search engine. If you're searching for a proper noun or phrase, make sure to put it between quotation marks (here's a sample search on my name so you can see what I mean).

DuckDuck's results are very accurate, and seem to eliminate the junk that so often shows up in other search engines. I like the icons next to each search result. I only wish that DuckDuck would show the total number of results.

Click on the little pull-down menu next to the magnifying glass icon to limit your search to specific types of sites and results. If you like to control how your results appear click the "Settings" link on the upper navigation and you'll find a slew of things you can customize. Click the "Goodies" link and you'll see a ton of cool options, from pre-defined searches to search syntax hints.

Finally, unlike Google which tracks your searches and shares that information with advertisers (and yes...your Google searches CAN be traced back to you), DuckDuck does not track any of your searches or clicks. DuckDuck even has a cool tutorial that shows what Google tracks, and what they don't.

SMILE! MAKE SOMEONE'S DAY & BE NICE :)
