You start out with the best intentions (diet! exercise! stay on budget!). But, all too soon, your resolve starts to wane and a cheeseburger renders you powerless. Or not. The following five strategies will help you hold your ground--no matter what temptations are luring you in the opposite direction.
1. Eat a turkey sandwich - On average, we spend four hours each day actively resisting things we desire. Every time we refuse to succumb--say, by washing the dishes before watching TV or by holding our temper--our bodies draw on our store of glucose, which carries energy to the muscles and brain. When our glucose levels get low, our will-power weakens. To keep it high, eat regular meals that are full of protein and good carbohydrates, like a sandwich of lean meat and cheese packed between two slices of whole-wheat bread. And never start a challenging task on an empty stomach. Roy F. Baumeister, Ph.D. Professor of Psychology at Florida State
2. Anticipate roadblocks - When you start pursuing a goal, consider what might interfere with your plans. Always assume that glitches will come up and that your motivation may falter when they do. So if you're trying to cook more, do your food shopping well ahead of time. And make several meals the weekend beforehand, in case you don't get home in time to prepare dinner. Having a fallback makes it more likely that you'll accomplish your aims. Sandra Aamodt, Ph.D. is a neuroscientist based in Northern California
3. Do the opposite of what You normally Do - Like a muscle, your resolve can be strengthened over time with practice, even if you're not trying to correct a specific bad habit. Anytime you modify your routine, you're developing self-control. For example, try to brush your teeth or open doors with your nondominant hand. Once you've succeeded in making a tiny change, you can work toward accomplishing something more substantive. Heidi Grant Halvorson, PH.D. social psychologist at Columbia University
4. Choose a Reward in Advance - When changing your behavior (like trying to exercise each day), pick something--whether it's a piece of chocolate or relaxing on the couch for 30 minutes--that you'll treat yourself to once you've accomplished your objective. It could be months before you enjoy exercise on its own merits. So, in the meantime, when you look at your running shoes, you could think, "I'm going jogging because I want the prize that is waiting for me when I finish my workout". Placing all your attention on the end goal keeps you from being as focused on the pain or effort of the activity itself. Charles Duhigg, New York City investigative reporter for the New York Times.
5. Chill - Has beating yourself up ever helped you stick to a diet or stay within your budget? Probably not. You may even have ended up indulging more. (To wit: People with credit-card debt who are hard on themselves tend to rack up bigger charges than they would have otherwise.) Instead, ask yourself this: When am I likely to err again, and how will I prevent that from happening? Once you've figured out hot to avoid the problem in the future, let it go. Kelly McGonigal, PH.D health psychologist at Stanford University, Palo Alto

Gear of the Year 2011 - Christmas ideas as well
Here is just a smattering of Gear of the Year!
The Smarter Phone: Don't do Apple? Opt for the Droid Bionic, the best Android powered smart-phone ever tried. Under its huge 4.3-inch display hides a dual-core processor, which, along with its ultrafast 4G connection, makes you feel as if you're working (or playing) on your home computer. It's a full-size PC that fits in your palm [$300; motorola.com]
The Phone-Friendly Gloves: Until now, most gloves that play nice with touchscreen phones has done so by using awkward metal buttons on the finger-tips. The Outdoor Research Ambit employs a coating on the leather palms and fingers so wearers can execute the most intricate, full-fingered cell-phone screen swipes to, say, answer an important call from the boss or make a crucial fantasy-football transaction, all from the lift.[$98; outdoorresearch.com]
The Shot-Saving Golf Ball: In passionate pursuit of a more accurate shot, Nike's 20XI does away with the golf ball's conventional rubber core and replaces it with a lighter resin. Since heavier metals surround its perimeter, the ball flies straight off the tee, with less movement at impact and more at the apex of its trajectory. Practically, that translates into fewer hooks and slices and more green-grabbing spin as it falls to Earth. After bashing quite a few, we became believers.[$46/dozen; nike.com]
The Endless Memory Card: Whether you're vacationing on Cyprus or volcano-luging in South America, the Eye-Fi Mobile X2 makes friends, family, and random twitter followers jealous by instantly uploading your shots. The WiFi-enabled SD card beams its contents straight to your computer, tablet, phone, or social network so you have smartphone-camera convenience without having to sacrifice picture quality.[$80; eye.fi]
The Genius GPS: With its five-inch screen and continent-spanning maps, the TomTom Go Live 1535M is a compelling reminder that smartphones haven't taken over the navigation game just yet. Its drive times are accurate even in unpredictable urban areas, and a lane-guidance system eliminates the need for last-minute lane changes. It can even snag hotel and restaurant reviews from travel sites.[$250; tomtom.com]
The Faster Flosser: Fling the string to the trash bin and clean between your chompers in seconds with Sonicare AirFloss, a want that gets between teeth with a burst of pressurized air and micro droplets of water for a faster, more accurate clean. Move the nozzle from one spot to the next, squeeze the trigger, and plaque is instantly blasted away. The entire process feels refreshing - and uses less than a teaspoon of water.[$90; target.com]

Stocks that Pay Dividends!
3 Stocks you want to get NOW! :)
1) Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) is one of just four companies that carry a AAA grade on its debt. The company offers a 3.6% yield and has been very reliable--it's made steady payments since 1944 and has increased its dividend annually for the last 49 years. I think the company can accelerate its earnings growth over the next few years thanks to breakthroughs from its biopharmaceutical businesses. The company's pipeline includes potential new treatments for Alzheimer's disease, prostate cancer, hepatitis C, and a stroke prevention medicine. In our view, shares do not fully reflect the value of J&J's pipeline potential, and as a result we believe shares are attractively valued. Meanwhile, J&J should be affected less and less by major patent expirations on earlier products. Stock Price: $64.36 - Dividend Yield: 3.6%
2) AT&T (T) pays a 5.8% dividend. The telecommunications giant had made payouts since 1984 and has increased dividends steadily over the last 26 years, if completed, AT&T's merger with T-Mobil USA will make it No. 1 wireless operator in the U.S.(At press time, the U.S. Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit to block the proposed acquisition) The union should bring about operating savings that will fully offset the purchase price. Over the past 5 years, AT&T has grown its dividend about 5% per year on average. We expect a 2% growth rate in the next five years. We expect a 2% growth in a stabilizing economy thanks to AT&T's wireless and television businesses. Stock Price: $28.79 - Dividend Yield: 5.8%
3) Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP) which operates oil and gas pipelines and storage facilities, pays a 6.6% dividend yield. Kinder Morgan has some 28,000 miles of pipelines used to transport natural gas and refined oil. The company has paid a dividend since 1992 and has increased its payout to investors the last 14 years running. We think Kinder Morgan can generate low double-digit income earnings growth this year, reflecting acquisitions and increased demand for storage capacity. For the past decade this dividend stock has delivered annualized total returns of 19.5%. What's more: A $10,000 investment in Kinder Morgan 20 years ago would be worth $190,000 today. In the next year, the company plans to build up its energy transportation and storage assets--one reason we think it is insulated from any decrease in oil or gas prices.
Stock Price: $70.56 - Dividend Yield: 6.6%

Money Management For The Time-Pressed
You don't need as long as you think to get your financial life in order. Just squeeze in these 12 easy moves--some of which take a mere 15 minutes to tackle.
With longer work days complicating the already Herculean task of juggling job and family, you probably don't have a minute to spare. Like many people, you're eager to find ways to get the most done in the least amount of time. That helps explain why you find yourself answering e-mails in the grocery store checkout line and eating in the car while shuttling between activities.
Lack of time may also be to blame for the fact that financial tasks all too often fall to the bottom of your to-do list. According to government time-use studies, the average American rarely gets to money-management chores; those who do will spend a scant 15 minutes a day on them.
Granted, it's not just time that get's in the way. Many financial projects can seem overwhelming because of the sheer number of choices (which investment is best out of the thousands available? which credit card? which cable provider?). Studies show that when people are presented with too many possibilities, they can become paralyzed, a phenomenon known in social science circles as the paradox of choice. Carnegie Mellon economist George Loewenstein, who studies consumer behavior, explains that people do nothing because they're afraid of doing the wrong thing. But as Baltimore financial planner Tim Maurer notes, "Inaction is a decision too--and ordinarily not a good one."
Fortunately, you don't need more than a coffee break, a lunch hour, or a Saturday morning to make some smart moves with your money--moves that can cut your expenses, boost your savings, and protect your family's finances. "The key to meeting long-term goals is to break them into a short-term steps that are easier to accomplish," says Loewenstein. Turn the page for a dozen small steps with big payoff, whether you have 15 minutes or a few hours to spare.
Get on track for retirement. Yes, you really can devise a smart savings plan for retirement in just a quarter of an hour. The potential reward is huge: A survey by banking giant HSBC found that people who have even a rudimentary plan for reaching retirement goals are ending up with up to three times as much money as those without one.
Step One: Figure out your monthly savings rate at T. Rowe Price's Retirement Income Calculator (troweprice.com) Time needed: five minutes.
Step Two: Coming up short? Use the remaining 10 minutes to pump up your 401(k) contributions on your plan's website. If you can't put away as much as the calculator recommends, committ to automatically increasing the amount you're saving at the time of your raise; half of large employers offer this feature, according to Aon Hewitt.
Target your Savings. Want to save money for a rainy or sunny vacation week but never have enough leftover cash to stash for these goals? Have the money taken directly from your paycheck, so you'll never miss it. Only about 20% of workers split there paycheck among multiple accounts, though many employees with access to direct deposit can do so, reports electronic-payments industry group NACHA. The association found that those who take advantage save $90 more a month than those who don't.
How To Do It: If you don't have dedicated savings accounts for each of your goals, set them up. Discover Bank (discoverbank.com) is a good option since it consistently pays higher-than-the-average rates, recently 1% a year. Opening accounts online takes 10 minutes tops. Next contact your payroll department to see if you can split your paycheck; if so, figure on filling out a form, adding yet another five minutes. Not an option? Set up automatic transfers from your checking account so that the money is moved on payday.
Know the Score. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling reports that only four in 10 Americans know their credit scores. A good reason to be among them: This number determines what interest rate you'll get on loans and credit cards.
How To Check: Pony up $20 to get your score at myfico.com The FICO scoring model, the one most commonly used by lenders, ranges from 300 to 850. A score of 740 or higher entitles you to the best rates; if yours is lower, see "Juice your score" below.
Download a shopping buddy. You know that coupons can reduce the bite groceries and other household goods take out of your budget--25% of take-home pay for the average family--but you can't spend hours perusing the Sunday circulars. Fortunately, there are apps for that. Download these:
Coupon Sherpa. Delivers coupons to your phone for in-store scanning (free for iPhone and Android).
Cardstar. Stores your merchant loyalty cards on your phone, so you won't miss out on points or discounts (free for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone).
Juice your Credit Score. An excellent score--740 and up--is money in your pocket: On a 30-year fixed-rate $250,000 mortgage, someone with a score of 620 would pay about $240 more per month than someone with a 760. While a good score is earned over time, you can do these two things to quickly boost your number:
Step One: Get a free credit report from each of the three agencies that track consumer credit at annualcreditreport.com. Read them carefully looking for mistakes. Any errors-about one in five have them, the Policy & Economic Research Council estimates--could be costing you points, Report any problems to each of the bureaus and the lender (there's a form at each website).
Step Two: Call your card issuer to ask for an increase in your credit limit, since how much you tap of your available credit is a key factor in determining your score. The more unused credit you have, the better you look--ideally, you should use no more than 10% of what's available to you.
Shrink your Bills. Today the average wireless customer pays $1,320 annually; cable customers shell out around $800. BillShrink.com can help you reduce those costs. Fill out a quick worksheet--your address, how much you pay, favorite channels, and so on-and directly upload data from your phone account. The site will identify lower-cost providers based on your your current usage and show you exactly how much you could save over two years. Use the rest of the hour to cancel your current accounts and switch to a new carrier.
Protect your Legacy. Who wants to spend an afternoon thinking about their mortality? No one, which is why 55% of Americans don't have a will, according to FindLaw.com "But without one, you could be leaving disposition of your assets and the guardianship of your minor children to a court," says New Jersey attorney Gerard Brew. If you have kids and/or significant assets, you should really consult a lawyer. For now, however, download Quicken's WillMaker Plus ($35) from nolo.com. The program takes only 30 minutes to complete. But count on the discussion with your spouse over whether his mother or your brother would make a better gaurdian to add some time.
Get on Recruiters' radars. Today 89% of firms use social media to find candidates, according to Jobvite. Not seeking work? "The best time to create a digital footprint is before, you're looking," says Miriam Salpeter, author of 'Social Networking for Career Success'. That way your next move can find you.
How To Do It. If you're not yet on LinkedIn, the site most companies use to recruit, start by uploading your resume. Include your entire job history, since profiles with multiple jobs are 12 times more likely to be viewed than those with one; add a photo, and your click-through rate increases by seven times. Be sure to use keywords in your summary that are important in your industry (hint: check job ads to find them) so that you'll come up in searches.
Be sure to use keywords in your summary that are important in your industry (hint: check job ads to find them) so that you'll come up in searches.

some interesting facts, FUN & Mobile taking over? 'stuff'
Web technologies, including e-commerce shopping cart abandonment solutions(http://wsm.co/otb326) and some of the pros and cons of cloud computing(http://wsm.co/obprFe).
Data Feed Submission from Aten Software - Aten Software has released a product data feed submission software tool that automatically submits product data to shopping search engines, reading product data from the merchants' catalogs by using a product data export script that is copied to the storie's server. The script then generates raw data that the system uses to create more than 20 different feed formats. Web retailers are able to obtain free clicks from shopping engines that don't charge for listings such as Google Product Search, TheFind, Bing Shopping and GoShopping. Cost-per-click (CPC) advertising can be done in other shopping channels such as Nex Tag, PriceGrabber/Yahoo Shopping, Shopping.com and Shopzilla. The charge for the feed service is $21 per month for the first feed with an extra $12 per month fee for additional feeds, and currently supports e-commerce platforms including Yahoo! Stores, Magento and ASPDotNetStorefront.
Mobile Takeover - In an unremarkable turn of events, a new study by IDC tells us that by 2015 more people in the U.S. will access the Internet using mobile devices than those using desktop computers. Much of this is attributed to faster 4G network speeds and increased coverage, which makes surfing the Web on a mobile device comparable to a computer while being readily available almost all the time. The study predicts that mobile Web use will grow annually at a rate of 16.6% between 2010 and 2015, while the number of totl Internet users around the world will go from 2 billion to 2.7 billion-or about 40% of the global population.

thoughts..MONEY..inflation-proof your portfolio 10/12/2011
"You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the play and the opera,
And grace before the concert and pantomime, And grace before I open a book, And
grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing;
And grace before I dip the pen in the ink"
G.K. Chesterton, From An Early Notebook (Mid-1890's)
Inflation-Proof Your Portfolio: how you can craft an investment plan that keeps pace
Short-Term signs of inflation are easy to spot, from the higher tab to fill the tank at the gas pump to a noticeably beefier grocery bill for the same food you bought two weeks ago. Yet, while the weekly toll of inflation on your household budget is easy to track, the steady rise of prices exacts less visible but devastating long-term damage on your portfolio. The reason: Even relatively mild inflation over time can cut into the return on your retirement savings. In real terms that means money you have accumulated won't buy as much as it does now. In other words, you could come up short paying for the lifestyle that you've plotted 10 to 20 years in the future.
Between the year 2000 to April 2011, inflation has been modest--hovering mostly around a 1.5% to 3.6% rate of annual price increases as measured by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even though there was a spike in July of 2008, negative rates or mild deflation were recorded for several months in 2009. Even so, the cumulative rate of inflation for the entire period from January 2000 to April 2011 would be 33.2%. In real terms, $3,000 in household expenses at the beginning of the millenium would now cost you nearly $4,000 to cover.
Valerie Andrews, 51, had to consider that shift two years ago when she decided to step down from her accounts receivable position at an industrial supply company in Atlanta, Georgia. Andrews had salted away a sizable amount in her retirement savings around the time her firm offered a severance package. She consulted a financial planner, Fred O'Neal, and figured she could amass $500,000 in total with the money her company was presenting to early retirees. Andrews saw it as an opportunity to expand the personal printing company she operated out of her home, Val's Valuables, and to travel to see relatives across the country. "I've wanted to pursue personalized printing for years," says Andrews. "I worked at printing companies part time to learn as much as I could and now I can do a lot of things: marketing fliers, business cards, invitations, graduation mementos, and wedding pictures."
The key, says O'Neal, who works for the brokerage firm Edward Jones, was to give Andrews savings enough kick to keep up with price increases. His answer: Allocate 60% of Andrews' portfolio in equity funds that can help her benefit from the stock market's track record of outpacing inflation over time.
Consider these strategies to help inflation-proof your investments:
Engage in Portfolio allocation. Morningstar's Director of Personal Finance Christine Benz says it's important to analyze the mix of stocks (or equity mutual funds), bonds (or fixed-income mutual funds), and cash among your holdings. "You have to make sure you have a position in stocks to outpace inflation--even in retirement", she points out. The old rule of thumb is to subtract your age from 100 in order to find a suitable percentage of stocks or equity funds for your retirement savings. "That's not a bad starting point but as key as age is, it isn't the sole determinant. You have to factor in your tolerance for risk and your own personal needs as well," adds Benz.
Invest in fixed-income investments that keep up with inflation. Bonds typically pay investors a set rate of interest. For that reason, fixed-income investments can be particularly vulnerable to inflation over time. Low-risk Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities or TIPS and I-bonds' returns, however are linked to the inflations rate to ensure a real return on your investment. Benz maintains your TIPS holding should depend on the size of your portfolio. "It's possible that someone in retirement might hold 20% to 30% of his or her bond portfolio in TIPS with the explicit goal of protecting against inflation--further out from retirement would probably require a lower percentage."
Include commodities and real estate as part of your asset mix. Likw stocks, commodities and commercial real estate have proven track records to keep up with inflation. Raw materials and natural resources-corn, oil, and gold-tend to rise in price when inflation heats up. In the case of real estate, landlords are able to adjust rents for ofices and commercial space when prices are on the rise. One caveat: individual commodities and real estate prices can be very volatile. The best strategy is to add a bit--5% to 10%--to your portfolio through diversified ETFs or mutual funds that hold a varied portfolio spread among many holdings-James A Anderson
Inflation: The rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, and, subsequently, purchasing power is falling.

conversation starters...so start one :)
54% the percentage of U.S. employeres who think it's bad form to friend one's boss on Facebook. Some status updates she just doesn't need to see. ("Work sooo boring. Watching 30 Rock on Hulu.") But that doesn't mean you can't make a friendly gesture. On October 16, National Boss Bay, ask them out for lunch or a coffee. (FYI: That means you should pay.) She'll appreciate the thought, and it never hurts to book some real face time.
300 the number of individual pieces that make up the Statue of Liberty, which was dedicated in New York City 125 years ago, on October 28, 1886. The statue. a gift from France, sat unassembled in crates for more than a year while workers finished its pedestal. A lady needs a solid foundation if she's going to stand for freedom. (Also, copper robes are really, really heavy.)
7,000,000,000 the earth's population on October 31, as projected by the United Nations Population Division. (The 6 billionth baby, as it designated by the UN, was born in Bosnia just 11 years ago.) All bets are on Asia for this year's record-breaking birth: Since the sun rises in the east, Asian mothers get a head start on the day. Here's to that future crowning achievement.
6,250 the amount of landfill waste (in tons) that could be avoided if half the kids in America traded Halloween costumes instead of buying new ones. Scared by that statistic? This year, trick out your little goblins in getups that you borrow on National Costume Swap Day (October 8). Ask friends to participate with you, or visit greenhalloween.org/costumeswap to find an in-person or online swap event.
124 to 140 How many more calories American workers burned in one day on the job in 1960 than they do nowadays, according to the science journal Plos One. Back then, more than half of all jobs required physical labor. Today less than one-fifth do. How can you burn a few extra calories at your desk (that is, besides taking a sledgehammer to your computer)? Set an alarm that reminds you to walk a lap around your office every hour, and head out for a stroll at lunch.
9% the average amount a person's pelvis expands between the ages of 20 and 80, even if he or she doesn't gain any weight, as reported in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research. So if you can't fit into those sophomore-year jeans, don't beat yourself up. Take a broader view: It's hip to age gracefully.

I hear strawberries in California are magnificent this time of year - but not if the state approves the use of methyl iodide on strawberries and other food crops! Sign the petition asking the EPA to reverse its previous decision and prohibit the agricultural use of methyl iodide.

California is about to approve the use of methyl iodide -- a potent neurotoxin and carcinogen -- for use on strawberries and other food crops. The best way to stop it is to ask the U.S. EPA to restrict its use at the federal level. Sign the petition today.

Expertise : Life Lessons
5 ways to be a better friend - suggestions for creating your own enduring relationships
1. Stop Giving Advice: If you always tell your friend how to fix their problems, the relationship will be unbalanced. You become the One Who Knows All, and they become the One Who Is Troubled. Eventually you're both going to tire of those roles. Instead, let her bounce ideas off of you. Ask, "What are you planning to do about this tricky situation?" Or just give a supportive comment: "That sounds difficult. How do you feel about it?" Offer your opinion only if asked for it. Otherwise you're not having a dialogue; you're giving a lecture. Frank M Lachmann, Ph.D author of Transforming Narcissism, New York City psychologist
2. Show a different side of Yourself: One great way to that is to mix friends from different areas of your life-say throw a get-together with your buddies and your pals from work. You'll find yourself opening up more, and your friends will learn new things about you. Friendships benefit from a breath of fresh air. Sally Horchow, coauthor of The Art of Friendship: 70 Simple Rules For Making Meaningful Connections
3. Be Genuinely happy for your friend's Success: Friends want you to celebrate with them when good things happen. Sometimes that's harder than it sounds, especially if you're a little jealous of your pal's success. Swallow that emotion, because they don't just need a shoulder to cry on in a crisis. There also looking for someone to cheer there triumphs. Joy shared is joy doubled. Jennifer Litchman, one of the subjects of best selling book 'The Girls From Ames'
