ALL dog lovers :)
One grasshopper will not stop a train. But a million grasshoppers will." Please help.
I adopted Lilly last year and she has truly been a blessing! She was abused at her last home and came to us through the "Pilots for Paws" program. After a long journey, she has become a happy, sociable, active dog, but a few weeks ago she suffered a "Medial Patellar Luxation" (http://www.2ndchance.info/patella.htm). After spending hundreds of dollars on x-rays, sedatives and pain meds, the diagnosis is in: Lilly needs knee surgery.
I've saved up $500 so far but the surgery is nearly $2,000 and I just don't have the money. I even thought about not paying bills for a month or two in order to get the surgery ASAP. But I have a son who comes first, and I just had to pay for glasses, allergy shots and a retainer. It's killing me to see the dog like this: she is completely lame, depressed, and has no quality of life now that she can't take walks or play.
If only 1000 people could be moved to give $1, or 500 people could be moved to give $2, I would be able to pay for the surgery and give Lilly a good life again. She's only 2, and has many years ahead of her.
I believe in PAYING IT FORWARD, and if this fundraiser works, I swear that I will give $1 to 1,000 causes over the next year.
There is a saying: "One grasshopper will not stop a train. But a million grasshoppers will." Please help.

5 HOT StartUps..
5 HOT Industries for Startups!
Every budding entrepreneur wants to find the next Big growth sector. A recovering economy and changing consumer needs are creating opportunities for new businesses, and market research firm IBISWorld has identified the fastest rising industries for startups. Those with strong projected growth are fairly new, according to IBISWorld Industry Research Analyst Brian Bueno. Although U.S. manufacturing is expected to shrink, Bueno believes that robust demand in service and technology sectors will likely spur business creation.
1. Corporate Wellness Services: This sector is expected to be a hotbed of startup activity in years to come. Rising healthcare costs coupled with employee wellness discounts have fueled corporate demand for the services of wellness providers. The average annual growth rate is projected to reach 8.7%, and the annual revenue growth rate will reach 9.8% by 2016, reports IBISWorld. For more industry information, visit the Medical Wellness Association at
2. Food Trucks and Street Vendors: Thanks to a love of exotic foods and eat-on-the-go convenience, street vendors from pushcarts to food trucks are growing at a fast pace. The street vendor industry is projected to achieve an average annual revenue growth of 3.7% over the next five years to top a total $1.7 billion. While fast food businesses have experienced a slowdown due to changing consumer tastes and the struggling economy, demand for for unique and gourmet food trucks has surged, reports IBISWorld. There is broad opportunity for vendors in large metropolitan areas across the country. To learn more, see "Selling Without a Store" at
3. Social Commerce: Niche segments that combine social media with content appear to show the most promise, notes Bueno. In addition, e-commerce will continue to flourish with no slowdown in sight. This makes social commerce in particular a growing trend. Social commerce combines the elements of social media and e-commerce, says Bueno, allowing shoppers to interact while searching for products online. Surveys show that millenials want to shop more within sites like Facebook. Retailers and brands are using social commerce to engage customers. Martha Stewart recently teamed up with the social commerce startup OpenSky. IBISWorld projects an annual revenue growth rate of 9.6% by 2016 for e-commerce firms.
4. Social Network Game Development: This industry has experienced tremendous growth since 2007 because of the growth of social network websites. Social network games include the popular Farmville and Mob Wars. Opportunities are opening up for companies with new ideas capable of capturing audiences, especially as games continue to shift to smartphone applications, reports IBISWorld. Social gaming is heavily app driven. Over the next five years, industry revenue is projected to grow an average of 24.4% annually. More than 250 social gaming companies are expected to enter the industry this year. Professionals can consult Blacks In Gaming a trade group that helps minority entrepreneurs develop apps.
5. Wineries: Beverages that do more than quench your thirst, such as energy and relaxation drinks, have grown rapidly in popularity. But don't discount old industry drinks like wine and beer. Wine consumption topped 2.54 gallons per year, per person in 2010 and wine is a growing favorite among millenials. Adding to this trend is the growing popularity of American wines in international markets. In 2012, more than 280 wineries are expected to open in the U.S. IBISWorld states that medium barriers to entry and moderate concentration among the large wine companies are creating opportunities for new entrants, especially inexpensive wines, despite substantial startup costs. The Association of African American Vintners supports wine professionals worldwide.

Group Messaging Service...Did You know?
Facebook has just acquired group messaging service Beluga, we’ve learned.
Here’s what we know: Facebook has acquired both the product and the team, and the plan is apparently to keep the service open for now. With past acquisitions, Facebook has only acquired companies for their talent. But this time it’s apparently a bit different, as they’re interested in both the talent and the technology behind Beluga.
It was barely two months ago that we first wrote about Beluga — when I called it my “group messaging white whale“. Since then I’ve been a non-stop user of the service and figured it would be one of the stand-out stars at SXSW this year. Today changes things a bit, obviously.
But that doesn’t change the fact that the technology behind the product did seem to be rock solid — so this was a good, fast move by Facebook.
And they had to be fast. Beluga had been in the midst of raising an angel round of funding — and the round was getting very competitive, we’d heard in recent weeks. It would seem that Facebook made the small team of three (all of whom are ex-Googlers) an offer they couldn’t refuse.
Yes, Facebook also just acquired more Google talent.
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but we do know that the Beluga team will be working with the groups and messaging teams at Facebook.
Here’s Facebook’s statement:
We’re psyched to confirm that we’ve just acquired the talent and assets of Beluga, whose simple and elegant mobile apps blew us away as a solution to help groups of friends stay in touch on the move. We’re looking forward to welcoming co-founders Ben Davenport, Lucy Zhang and Jonathan Perlow, and we’re excited that the team will continue their vision for groups and mobile communication as part of Facebook.
On the topic of it shutting down, Facebook has this to say:
For now, Beluga will continue to function as it does today. Beluga accounts and data will not be lost. We’ll be providing more details on future plans for Beluga in the coming weeks.
To me, this deal makes a lot of sense from Facebook’s perspective. The group messaging space is about to explode and Facebook, with both Groups and Messages, should be at the forefront of it. But in order for that to happen, they need a better mobile experience for each. And with Beluga, they got just that.
The question now is if they roll it fully into the Facebook app experience, or if they use the Beluga technology for a new stand-alone one just based around messages. You’d have to believe it will be the former, but again, they clearly liked what Beluga was doing as a stand-alone product.
Update: And here’s the post on the matter from Beluga:
Beluga is now friends with Facebook
We are happy to announce that Facebook has acquired Beluga!
Since launching Beluga, we’ve appreciated all the enthusiasm and positive feedback from our users. We’re excited to continue to build our vision for mobile group messaging as part of the Facebook team. Beluga and Facebook are committed to create new and better ways to communicate and share group experiences.
For now, Beluga will continue to function as it does today. Your Beluga account and data will not be lost. We’ll be providing more details on future plans for Beluga in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
Ben, Lucy and Jon
Team Beluga
Update 2: On the topic of being acquired rather than take funding, co-founder Ben Davenport tells us:
In the process of talking to Facebook, we found our vision aligned very well with theirs. Many people inside Facebook are big fans of the app. We are very excited to work together to bring a great mobile group experience to a lot more users!

3 Myths..
3 myths other Internet Marketers don’t tell the truth about
Internet Marketing is all the rage at the moment. Everyone wants to have a business where they can work from home and watch the passive income flood in. It’s becoming more and more popular, particularly as more people are hit by the credit crunch or just fed up of the rat race and want to become their own boss.
Unfortunately whilst the concept of becoming an Internet Marketer grows so does the hype and BS within the industry. Not to mention scams and products which continually under-deliver. You really do have to do your research before investing your cash.
As you’ve probably already gleaned from reading my blog, I try and be honest and tell it like it is. Internet Marketing is bloody hard work. It’s not easy and it takes time to make money consistently.
Here’s 3 common myths about Internet Marketing:
Make money working from a beach
How often have you seen a blog or a video from an Internet Marketer showing off how they’re working from their hotel/beach/villa etc.? Looks gorgeous, blue skies, sand… kind of hypnotic – want a piece of that? Well I don’t know about you but I’ve never worked from a beach before. Technically (as I’m virtual and just need a PC) I could but let’s face it I have commitments, I have a family and as much as I would love to pack up and take my daughter out of school – her school wouldn’t allow me to (as most schools) and I’m not planning on home-schooling! Plus have you ever tried getting sand out of your PC or Mac?
But let’s get back to reality here… Most of the Internet Marketers who film themselves at their luxury resorts made their money before entering the world of Internet Marketing. How many times have you read the sob story of how they were broke and then they finally found the system/solution and now make 7 figures a month etc. (and therefore work from the beach). I’m sorry but I just don’t buy it and I doubt you do too.
I’m proud to say that before becoming an Internet Marketer I set up and sold a successful business and prior to that I was a Training Manager in London and worked with clients including Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver. I haven’t struggled and I don’t plan on struggling. Yes I’ve made mistakes along the way and I’ve also made and lost a lot of money… but that’s part of running a business. Any business. You have to be prepared to take risks – sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t… it’s all part of the fun of running a business.
And what about Internet Marketers filming videos/creating blogs by their gorgeous swimming pools and huge houses… it’s all perception it’s not real. It’s created as an illusion to impress you. Don’t let it fool you.
The 4 hour Work Week
I have to be honest here – I genuinely don’t think the 4 hour work week exists. I’m sure many people will argue this with me (and please feel free to do so) but how an earth can you create millions consistently working 4 hours a week? I don’t know anyone who does.
Take a look at the top entrepreneurs they work crazy hours. In fact the more I earn, the more I seem to work… silly I know but I guess I get greedy and want more and if I work a little more on launching a new product or mentoring another client that means more hours for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining – I love what I do and feel very privileged to be able to work from home and earn a good income whilst spending time with my family. But a 4 hour work week – I’m not buying it!
You can make money quickly online
Well let’s look at the facts. I made money reasonably quickly online… BUT and it’s a big but I already had a presence. I already had sold a business, had contacts, and was an active user Social Media (I’ve been active on social media since 2008) so had a following/presence online. Someone starting out fresh, or for an unknown person, it will take considerable amount of time to build. In fact most people soon realise that it doesn’t actually happen overnight and soon give up for that very reason. Many people don’t realise how much work is involved and a lot of people start off with having a day job on top of this which is one of the reasons “give up” rate is so high within Internet Marketing.
I could go on… there are so many things that Internet Marketers just don’t tell you about. The industry is viewed through very rose tinted glasses. Remember – if it was that easy everyone would be doing it. Running a business is incredibly hard work and it takes time to get results and Internet Marketing is no different.

The Best Buzz
A New breed of Beard Trimmers makes it easy to craft everything from five o'clock shadow to fashionable scruff.
Conair i-Stubble - $70, www.conair.com
This trimmer has a helpful LCD screen that displays battery life and settings, and its motorized head dials up and down through 15 different lengths. But its limit is 5mm, so getting a precise trim on a longer beard is nearly impossible.
Braun Cruzer Beard & Head - $60, www.braun.com
Braun keeps it simple with two removable combs(from 1mm to 11mm and 10mm to 20mm)and a pop-up sideburn sculptor. We loved its curved design and ease of use, but it was the least powerful of the lot, requiring twice as many passes as the best in out test.
Remington Touch Control - $55, www.remingtonproducts.com
With 175 different length options (from 0.4mm up to 18mm, in 0.1mm increments) this LED-touchscreen trimmer offers the most versatility of the bunch. It's a shame, then, that its screen is too sensitive - if you leave it unlocked, one tap can cause its length and speed to jump several levels.
Norelco Vacuum Stubble and Beard Trimmer Pro - $60, www,usa.philips.com
Its narrow head makes trimming tight spaces easy, and it offers a variety of lengths(18 settings from 0.5mm to 18mm), but this razor's best asset is an embedded vacuum, which sucks up clippings into a tap-to-clean compartment. Its length-setting wheel can be stubborn, but this trimmer kept scruff in check and our sinks clean, too.

Bring Out the Reserves
Never get caught with a dead phone again: refuel all your gadgets on the fly with one of these high-capacity backup chargers.
1. Innergie PocketCell $80; www.amazon.com
The 2.5-ounce PocketCell earns our highest praise, thanks to a smartly designed cable that holds mini-and micro-USB connectors(for the portable electronics), as well as Apple's proprietary 30-pin one. This lets you change any device, without having to stow spare cables. Though it has the smallest battery, it supplied more than half the jice to a Kindle Fire. We also used it to revive a dead iPhone to full charge.
2. Mophie Juice Pack Powerstation $80, www.mophie.com
The elegant backup's high-output battery delivered the fastest charge, juicing an iPhone in 90 minutes. It can fill an iPad to 60% or provide two full phone charges, and it's certified for 500 cycles, making it the most durable in our test. Impressive, nut we wish it offered more than one USB port.
3. Scosche GoBat II $80, www,scosche.com
The beefy GoBat, which looks like a portable hard drive, can charge two devices at the same time. It pairs with Scosche's Revive app, which tracks such info as how long plugged-in devices need to refuel. Despite measuring 5 by 3 inches, the GoBat charged an iPhone only twice and iPad to 60%; charging the unit itself took a full seven hours - a bummer considering it's the biggest one here.
4. Tylt Powerplant $60, www.sprint.com
Flip down the Tylt's front flap to expose its USB port and swinging arm - the arm can be customized with a 30-pin or micro USB. Its battery, the biggest of the group, refueled a depleted tablet on one charge, but its build quality left something to be desired: Its arm made charging devices awkward, and the flap fell off our test unit. Look elsewhere.

Mix Masters
Best In Class - Breville Hemisphere Control Blender $200; www.williams-sonoma.com
With its wide blades, contoured pitcher, five speeds, and three additional(pulse, smoothie, and crushed ice), this home machine wowed Schenker-high praise from a chef whose go-to tool is often an industrial blender. "It's intuitively designed and simple to use," he says, after making everything from potato sour to apple puree without a glitch. The LCD timer and tuck-away cord also earned props. "If it could grind spices, it's be my dream blender," he says. "Still, it's my faorite here."
Cuisinart Blend & Cook - $200; www.cuisinart.com
A hot plate sits below the pitcher, letting you cook soups and sauces as easily as you can blend a smoothie: Add ingredients and set the temperature, and the device sautes, simmers, and stirs. Schenker didn't think the blades pureed perfectly, but he loved the multifunctionality: "It cuts out stove-top heating. It even makes omelets!"
Vitamix Pro Series 500 - $600; www.williams-sonoma.com
With 10 variable speeds, a pulse button, three preprogrammed settings, and a blade so accurate that it can pulverize peppercorns, the Vitamix is the Bentley of blending. Schenker loved its ease of use and thought it tackled most jobs well, but he felt the pricey machine should have been more adept at crushing ice.
Omega BL480 - $500; www.omegajuicers.com
With a three-hp motos and a gargantuan blade, the BL480 whipped frozen drinks and milk shakes with aplomb. "It crushes ice like a beast," says Schenker. But it wasn't great at processing herbs or purees. "It's all about power, not precision," he says. "It's appropriate only for a bar - or a boozy deck in the Hamptons."

My friend Anne Marie Harpen will be playing here, come on out! http://www.thechameleonclub.com/
Startups to Watch..
CoupFlip launched last year, buys and sells unredeemed LivingSocial and Groupon vouchers--which amount anywhere from 20 to 40% on any given deal. Users shop for deals according to price range, location on a map, keywords or categories such as clothing, travel or beauty. Users can also earn $5 for referring a friend through Facebook Connect.
Plyfe is a new gamification service and platform that completed a $1 million deed round of funding in February. The service moved from stealth mode to a public beta in March, and now anyone can visit the site and request an invitation to the launch. The Plyfe team is comprised of a group of veteran entrepreneurs from the mobile, social, advertising, media and e-commerce sectors.
JumpTime is a startup analytics firm that aims to help media publishers and Web marketers find and maximize online value through key "econometrics" The company's sophisticated proprietary algorithms calculate the exact value of a website's content in real time. Think "Moneyball" for media publishers.
SubtleData offers a platform that provides a back-end loyalty and rewards service for e-commerce merchants and app developers. It allows online retailers to connect point-of-sale services through their mobile devices, which could be a very attractive commodity for smaller businesses with low overheads that are reluctant to invest in a lot of extra sales software.
Ordoro, like SubtleData, gained some attention at the SXSW Interactive show in Austin in March, and its founders are products of the University of Texas business school. The have created software that helps online businesses large and small manage their ordering and shipping processes.
