conversation starters...so start one :)

54% the percentage of U.S. employeres who think it's bad form to friend one's boss on Facebook. Some status updates she just doesn't need to see. ("Work sooo boring. Watching 30 Rock on Hulu.") But that doesn't mean you can't make a friendly gesture. On October 16, National Boss Bay, ask them out for lunch or a coffee. (FYI: That means you should pay.) She'll appreciate the thought, and it never hurts to book some real face time.

300 the number of individual pieces that make up the Statue of Liberty, which was dedicated in New York City 125 years ago, on October 28, 1886. The statue. a gift from France, sat unassembled in crates for more than a year while workers finished its pedestal. A lady needs a solid foundation if she's going to stand for freedom. (Also, copper robes are really, really heavy.)

7,000,000,000 the earth's population on October 31, as projected by the United Nations Population Division. (The 6 billionth baby, as it designated by the UN, was born in Bosnia just 11 years ago.) All bets are on Asia for this year's record-breaking birth: Since the sun rises in the east, Asian mothers get a head start on the day. Here's to that future crowning achievement.

6,250 the amount of landfill waste (in tons) that could be avoided if half the kids in America traded Halloween costumes instead of buying new ones. Scared by that statistic? This year, trick out your little goblins in getups that you borrow on National Costume Swap Day (October 8). Ask friends to participate with you, or visit greenhalloween.org/costumeswap to find an in-person or online swap event.

124 to 140 How many more calories American workers burned in one day on the job in 1960 than they do nowadays, according to the science journal Plos One. Back then, more than half of all jobs required physical labor. Today less than one-fifth do. How can you burn a few extra calories at your desk (that is, besides taking a sledgehammer to your computer)? Set an alarm that reminds you to walk a lap around your office every hour, and head out for a stroll at lunch.

9% the average amount a person's pelvis expands between the ages of 20 and 80, even if he or she doesn't gain any weight, as reported in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research. So if you can't fit into those sophomore-year jeans, don't beat yourself up. Take a broader view: It's hip to age gracefully.

I wanna batwing suit...you?

Tigern Odd-Martin Helgestad (aka "Tiger") is no stranger to skimming treetops in wingsuits (watch here: http://bit.ly/krd4yO). This is a compilation of his BASE jumping, wingsuit proximity flying and cow-riding from the 2011 season in Norway. I'll have to keep cow-riding in mind next time we're on a weather hold.

I hear strawberries in California are magnificent this time of year - but not if the state approves the use of methyl iodide on strawberries and other food crops! Sign the petition asking the EPA to reverse its previous decision and prohibit the agricultural use of methyl iodide.

California is about to approve the use of methyl iodide -- a potent neurotoxin and carcinogen -- for use on strawberries and other food crops. The best way to stop it is to ask the U.S. EPA to restrict its use at the federal level. Sign the petition today.

Over the holidays my husband and I received lots of great wine. I normally focus my attention on the label around the body of the glass, but a gold label around the cork of a nice bottle of California cabernet (Three Wishes) caught my attention.
