How to pay off college debt..

The most expensive college in the United States--Sarah Lawrence College, in Bronxville, New York--charges $44,220 a year for tuition. And that doesn't include fees and room and board, which can cost an additional $14,000. Even more disturbing is that the annual cost of a college education has risen by 130% in the past 20 years, according to the College Board. As a result, Americans have racked up about a $trillion in education debt from both federal and private student loans. Here are five steps to paying off any lingering loans of your own--and to helping your children settle theirs down the road.

1. Pay off variable private loans first - if you or your recent grad has this type of loan--which makes up 15% of the total U.S. education debt--this may seem like an odd move. After all, the interest rates on on variable private loans (given by banks and credit unions) are currently lower than the fixed rates on federally backed and private loans. But historically this situation is unusal, and if the economy improves, interest hikes are probable in the near future. "Rates could climb to 5 to 6% over the next four years, making your monthly burden unmanageable". That's why it's wise to unload these balances as soon as possible. If you can, pay twice the required amount until you have eliminated this debt and make only the minimum monthly contribution toward your fixed-rate federal loans, since those rates cannot increase.

2. Choose the right federal-student-loan repayment plan - when it comes to Stafford, Perkins, PLUS, and Direct Consolidation loans--which make up 85% of education debt--there are five repayment options. They range from the standard plan, which requires a minimum payment of $50 every month for up to 10 years, to the new, income-based plan that caps your monthly payments at a "reasonable percentage" of your income (determined by the federal government) and forgives any debt remaining after 25 years. So which schedule is best for you? People often make the mistake of going with the option that has the smallest monthly payment, which causes them to pay thousands more in interest over the loan's life span," says Lauren Asher, the president of the Institute for College Access & Success, a non-profit that works to make college more affordable. Aim to put 10% of your gross (that is, pretax) income toward your your education debt. Go to studentaid.ed.gov to calculate which repayment plan fits your budget.

3. Ask your employer to pay off your student loan - a little-known way to eliminate college debt is to appeal to your boss for a compensation package. "Some midsize companies cannot pay the kind of salaries that a large corporation can, but they may be inclined to offer lower wages in exchange for a onetime payout toward your loan", says Manuel Fabriquer, the president of College Planning ABC, a consulting firm in San Jose, California. Why? "It costs them less in salary payments in the long run" (Those in fields that require a special degree, like tech, finance, and nursing, are most likely to receive this benefit.) If you're a recent grad looking for a job, bring this up during salary negotiations. Be willing to take a lower salary and commit to staying at the job for a specific time period in exchange for a payment toward your schooling. If you're a veteran employee for [insert time period] and I look forward to continuing to grow and learn here. As part of my compensation, can you put [insert amount] toward my loan?"

4. Consider consolidation - if you or your child graduated before July 1, 2006, it pays to roll multiple federal loans into one-you'll lock in an interest rate that's lower than what you're paying on each separate loan. Earned a diploma since then? All federal student loans now carry fixed interest rates, so there's no financial benefit to consolidating. (And it's highly unlikely that you'll be able to combine any variable private loans.) Nevertheless, if you have trouble keeping track of payment deadlines and have been hit with late fees on occasion, go ahead and consolidate. (For more information, go to SimpleTuition.com or loanconsolidating.ed.gov). You'll save some dough by doing so.

5. Sign up for auto-deductions - you may have already realized that automatic online loan payments make your life easier. What you may not know is that all government and some private lenders charge a slightly lower interest rate (usually 0.25% less) if you make your monthly remittance this way. Over 25 years of payments, you'll reduce your repayment period by at least a year, says Reyna Gobel, the author of 'Graduation Debt' (Wiley, $15). Best of all, you can sign up now, even if you've been repaying your loans for years.

Some useful tidbits..

1 billion - the total number of online pledges to celebrate Earth Day (April 22) that the Earth Day Network hopes to collect for its A Billion Acts of Green initiative. Think green acts, not greenbacks, for this pledge drive: You can vow to plant a garden, switch to LED lightbulbs, or walk more and drive less. Head to earthday.org/2012 to join the cause. Your one good deed could help make the environment a billion times better.

4.74 - the average number of people linking any two strangers, according to strangers from Facebook and University of Milan, who studied 721 million Facebook users. That's quite a status update to the six-degrees-of-separation theory of psychologist Stanley Milgram. In 1967 the professor asked a group of volunteers to send a document to a random Massachusetts resident via people they know thought might know him. Milgram found that the process required about six jumps for the documents to reach its intended recipient. The population may be expanding, but the world is getting smaller.

1.65 - the average number of lies told per day, as reported by a Michigan State University study sampling, 1,000 Americans. Among out-of-the-box thinkers, dishonesty could be even more prevalent, says a new report in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Researchers tested the creative abilities of hundreds of people, then asked the participants to take exams and grade them themselves. Those with "creative personalities" were more likely to fudge their results or overstate their abilties than were their less imaginative counterparts. The study's authors posit that it's easier for this inventive group to conjure up tall tales on short notice.

77,000 - the approximate age of of the world's oldest mattress, recently uncovered in a South African cave by a team of archeologists. Composed of about 15 layers of compacted stems and leaves, the specimen is an impressive 50,000 years older than the one previously considered the planet's oldest. Have a sinking feeling that your mattress could take third place? If you are frequently disrupted by your sleep partner's movements, or if your mattress is rounding its first decade, it might be time to spring for a replacement.

28x - about how much more monely companies with three or more women on the board of directors donate to charity, as compared with corporations with no female directors. In a study released last year by Harvard University and Catalyst, a research nonprofit devoted to women's advancement in the workplace, the former group gave an average of $27.1 million to philanthropic endeavors in 2007, while the latter forked over only $969,000.

9/10 - the fraction of U.S. households that always stock eggs, according to the NPD Group, a market-research firm in Port Washington, New York. Other top kitchen staples are milk and bread, kept on hand by 94.4 percent of the households. (French toast, anyone?) For tips on saving on groceries--buy milk at the pharmacy, where it can be up to 20 percent.

April 2012 What's New

Throwback cruiser - Early-20th-century motorcycles and the custom BMX bikes of the 1980s inspired Jeff Heesch's design for the Felt Deep Six, the latest of the company's nostalgic cruisers. "It's a killer combination of old-school styling with modern features," he says. And the result is striking: The black-cherry frame, balloon tires, spring seat, and flip-down handlebars make for a retro ride fit for both summer boardwalks and city streets. $749; http://www.feltbicycles.com/

Micro Superzoom - Point-and-shoots can't get much smaller. The next step is to shoehorn more tech into their tiny bodies, as Panasonic has done with its Lumix ZS20. The 14.1-megapixel cam is only 1.11 inches thick but boasts a 20x zoom, making it the slimmest eagle-eyed cam in that range. $349; http://www.panasonic.com/

Hell's Bells - The AC/DC pinball machine, a tribute to Australia's greatest rockers (sorry, Silverchair), is stocked with 12 of Angus and Co.'s hits, including "Thunderstruck" and "T.N.T.," to accompany your flipping. Best played wearing schoolboy gear. Starts at $5,700;  http://www.sternpinball.com/

Your Backwoods Best Friend - Beyond its fitness components (it tracks heart rate, pace, etc.), the Suunto Ambit's 3D compass and GPS snag your location faster than ever before. Oh, and it clocks altitude, and tracks the weather, too. $500;  http://www.suunto.com/us

4. Credit Card Statistics - is a free Web-based tool via AnnualCreditReport.com that offers information on credit scores, current balances, credit limits, and credit limit use. This site allows you to request a free credit file every 12 months from each of the major credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
When you review your credit score and explore ways to improve it, remember there "is no magic formula," says Robbie Hampton. "Everyone starts at a different number that's impacted when loans are paid off or brought up to date. The most important step you can take is to commit to improvement and stay on course." Be patient: It's a lot easier to reduce a credit score than to raise one.  ~ Bridget McCrea

5 Ways To Boost Your Credit Score - most people may know their credit score, but many still don't know what makes it go up and down. Here are five things that you can do to raise your rating.

1. Make early payments: Pay all credit card and loan bills before their statement due dates. Even make multiple payments during the month rather than a single remittance, says Bill Hampton. Making a payment before the due date can lower your utilization rate, which in turn can raise your credit score. If your total available credit is $20,000 and you have a $10,000 total balance, then according to FICO you have used 50% of your available credit-and that's your utilization rate. How much you owe is 30% of your  FICO score; your utilization rate is a larger part of that.

2. Stick to 33% credit use rule: Bill Hampton general partner with certified public accountant and business consulting firm Bishop, Hampton & Associates L.L.C. in Atlanta, suggests paying off or paying down all open lines of credit so that their individual balances don't exceed 33% of the total available credit. Use only that percentage of the total limit at one time.

3. Ask for a goodwill deletion: Request a goodwill deletion based on previous on-time payments. A goodwill deletion occurs when a creditor decides to remove a negative mark based on the customer's request. State your case in writing, explain why the payment was late, point out previous good payment history, and ask the creditor to reconsider the negative mark, giving the recipient 30 days to respond to the request, advises Bill Hampton. Removing one or two negative marks on your credit report will raise your credit score.

4. Keep aged accounts even if they are no longer useful: "A portion or your score is based on history and how long you've maintained lines of credit," says Robbie Hampton. According to FICO, 15% of your score is the length of your credit history. "Close a 15-year old account and you'll wipe out all of its history," Closing the account will increase your debt to available credit amount, which again will lower you credit score.

5. Remove a bad debt: Typically, paying off a collection account doesn't remove it from your credit report. However, sometimes collection agencies will agree to remove the debt from your credit report if you agree to pay it off. But get any such agreement in writing.
