the simple list: May
2,500 the miles clocked by Harry Truman & his wife Bess, on their road trip from Missouri to New York back in 1953 & traveling w/No security detail! (my times have changed hmm?)
1908 the year the 1st Mother's Day celebration took place in Grafton, West Virginia; Congress made it an official day in 1914 - Hug it out with Mom on May 10.
3pm the time for Americans to pause on Memorial Day for a moment of remembrance in honor of the fallen.
French mechanic Pierre Lallement widely believed to be the father of the modern bicycle. Celebrate National Bike Month & show everyone how you roll.
1 good excuse to Ring & run? Because you left a May Day basket on your neighbor's doorstep. Revive an old-time tradition, set a basket of blossoms on the stoop next door, hit the buzzer, then disappear with a spring in your step :)

Q. and A. more bang for your chuck
What's for dinner? Christine Jory, author of The 99 Cent Only Stores Cookbook (Adams Media, $13), recommends hitting your local dollar store for inexpensive mealtime fixin's.
Q. Why are the products at these stores so cheap?
A. Sometimes a simple packaging mistake--say, in the color of the label--can mean a $5 can of artichokes sells for 99cents. Manufacturers didnt intend for the items to be sold at these prices.
Q. What are the go-to staples you can pick up here?
A. Things to make casseroles, stews, and pasta dishes, like rice, spices, and canned tomatoes.
Q. Which ingredients are the best bargains?
A. Tradionally expensive olive oil and balsamic vinegar are great finds. (A 17-ounce bottle of olive oil normally costs around $9.50.) Sausage is also a good thing to stock up on, because it has a longer shelf life than many other meats.
Q. What has been your most unexpected find?
A. I'm always amazed at the wines available. They aren't just palatable; they're good. At times you'll find 99 cent bottles that are actually worth $40.

In honor of Earth Day 4 ways to preserve cash & the planet
If you want to go organic: Organic used to mean "expensive," but several retailers now have affordable organic house brands (such as Whole Foods' 365 Organic & Target's Archer Farms).
If you want to buy local: Plow thru the farmer's market right before it closes & you'll find sharp discounts (up to 35%) no one likes to head back home with perishable goods.
If you want to clean green: Try Arm&Hammer's Essentials line (starter kit,$3,target.com for stores) This concentrated formula makes twice the amount of cleaning solution for the same price as some non-friendly ones.
And for everything else: Check out ecobunga.com and sustainlane.com to get coupons on green products & coupon codes good for discounts or free shipping.
