Score a cheap summer rental & be Green?
Green mowing: Hustler's new Zeon, the 1st electric zero-turn-radius riding mower, gets 80 mins of run time per charge ($6,900; hustlerturf.com)
Score a cheap summer rental: with the summer rental market down 11% since 2008, "we've seen many homeowners reducing prices," three tips for a deal:
1. Wait: As midsummer approaches, renters with vacancies will panic & offer better rates.
2. Haggle: Many desperate owners are more willing to rent for less. Don't be afraid ro ask.
3. Stay longer: "You'll get a better deal if you book two weeks or more".
Loll's new Cabrio longer shows the same 'green' spirit - it's made of 320 recycled milk jugs - but its low-slung style brings to mind a sports car's seats. lolldesigns.com
Come out & enjoy 4 Summer Classic drinks @ Green Drinks July event 7/22

Green Outdoor Entertaining
*Grill clean. Charcoal can release damaging chemicals into the air. Switch to a cleaner-burning method, like the uGo FlameDisk ($15 for three, flamedisk.com), which is made of recyclable aluminum and contains ethanol, a renewable fuel.
*Save paper. For outdoor birthday parties, forgo place cards and instead use cake-decorating pens to write guests' names across the tops of their plates.
*Skip the plastic. Opt for biodegradable tableware made from a natural material, such as bamboo (11 inch plates, $12.50 for eight, conranusa.com).
*Keep bugs at bay. When pesky mosquitos threaten to end your party, drive them away naturally. Strategic placement of some potted marigolds may repel the critters, and they'll also add a nice touch to your outdoor decor.

Q. and A. more bang for your chuck
What's for dinner? Christine Jory, author of The 99 Cent Only Stores Cookbook (Adams Media, $13), recommends hitting your local dollar store for inexpensive mealtime fixin's.
Q. Why are the products at these stores so cheap?
A. Sometimes a simple packaging mistake--say, in the color of the label--can mean a $5 can of artichokes sells for 99cents. Manufacturers didnt intend for the items to be sold at these prices.
Q. What are the go-to staples you can pick up here?
A. Things to make casseroles, stews, and pasta dishes, like rice, spices, and canned tomatoes.
Q. Which ingredients are the best bargains?
A. Tradionally expensive olive oil and balsamic vinegar are great finds. (A 17-ounce bottle of olive oil normally costs around $9.50.) Sausage is also a good thing to stock up on, because it has a longer shelf life than many other meats.
Q. What has been your most unexpected find?
A. I'm always amazed at the wines available. They aren't just palatable; they're good. At times you'll find 99 cent bottles that are actually worth $40.

In honor of Earth Day 4 ways to preserve cash & the planet
If you want to go organic: Organic used to mean "expensive," but several retailers now have affordable organic house brands (such as Whole Foods' 365 Organic & Target's Archer Farms).
If you want to buy local: Plow thru the farmer's market right before it closes & you'll find sharp discounts (up to 35%) no one likes to head back home with perishable goods.
If you want to clean green: Try Arm&Hammer's Essentials line (starter kit,$3,target.com for stores) This concentrated formula makes twice the amount of cleaning solution for the same price as some non-friendly ones.

How long does it take to go green?
Everyday we need to think both long-term & short-term, individually & together. We make hundreds of choices re: green; whether to turn off a light, stop a dripping faucet, eat fresh or frozen food. This year, I think, will be a turning point for the planet. There have never been so many people as aware of there impact & of dwindling natural resources. Add to that an economic shakeup that has people and corporations all over the globe thinking about what they're spending and why, and the ingredients for change all fall into place. Let's take it step by step. See you all on March 25th, 6-730pm Fox-n-Hound Pub, Whole Foods Green Team presenting.
